Understanding Electrical Receptacles:
A Beginner's Guide for Engineers

What is a Receptacle?
AC power plugs and sockets connect devices to mains energy, providing them with electrical power. A plug is a device that connects to an electrically powered item, typically via a cable. A socket (or receptacle/outlet) is a device fixed in place, usually on the inside walls of buildings, and connected to an alternating current electrical circuit. Inserting the plug into the socket allows the device to draw electricity from the circuit.
Key Parts of Receptacle
1. Faceplate (Cover Plate)
- Function: A protective and decorative cover on the receptacle’s outside.
- Material: Usually made of plastic or metal.
- Purpose: Protects the internal parts of the receptacle and keeps everything looking neat.
2. Slots (Outlet Openings)
- Function: The holes where the prongs of a plug are inserted.
- Types:
- Two vertical slots: Hot and neutral.
- A round hole (if grounded): For the ground pin.
3. Terminals
- Function: Connect the receptacle to the building’s wiring.
- Types:
- Hot terminal: Usually brass-colored; connects to the live (hot) wire.
- Neutral terminal: Usually silver-colored; connects to the neutral wire.
4. Grounding Connection
- Function: Provides a path for electrical current to safely return to the ground in case of a fault, reducing the risk of shock or fire.
- Part: Grounding screw or terminal.
5. Mounting Yoke (Strap)
- Function: The metal frame that holds the receptacle together and helps attach it to the electrical box in the wall.
6. Internal Contacts
- Function: Metal pieces inside the receptacle that make contact with the prongs of a plug, allowing electricity to flow to the device.
7. Housing (Body)
- Function: The main casing that holds all the parts together.
- Material: Often made of durable plastic or a combination of plastic and metal.
